Ever biked through a storybook landscape steeped in history?✨A journey through the SACRO MONTE DI ORTA

Get ready to crank up your curiosity, PiedmontBikeTour followers!

Today, we're taking you on a sneak peek of one of our most enchanting experiential bike tours: a journey through the SACRO MONTE DI ORTA, a UNESCO World Heritage Site nestled in the heart of Piedmont!

Imagine this: you're cycling along a scenic promontory overlooking the picturesque Lake Orta. The gentle breeze whispers through your hair as a captivating story unfolds before you. A series of twenty chapels, each an artistic masterpiece, paint a vivid picture of the life of St. Francis. Sculptures and paintings come alive, transporting you back in time.

But the magic doesn't stop there. This open-air devotional complex isn't just a history lesson on wheels. The chapels are cleverly positioned, creating a scenic route that winds its way up the hilltop. As you pedal, breathtaking views of the lake and the charming San Giulio Island unfold before your eyes.

Intrigued by the origins of this sacred place? Buckle up!

The idea for the Sacro Monte di Orta dates back to 1583, inspired by a similar religious route in Varallo. Fast forward a few years, and thanks to the dedication of passionate individuals like Abbot Amico Canobio and architect Cleto da Castelletto Ticino, the dream became a reality.

The story continues! Over the years, renowned artists like the Fiammenghinis, Morazzone, and the Nuvolone brothers left their mark on the Sacro Monte. Their work is a captivating blend of realism and Baroque theatricality, creating scenes that feel both intimate and awe-inspiring.

The grand finale of your bike tour awaits at the Church of San Nicolao. This ancient building, originally built in a proto-Romanesque style, was transformed during the 17th century to resemble the lower Basilica of Assisi. Inside, a treasure trove awaits: a group of wooden statues depicting Our Lady of Mercy, dating all the way back to the 14th century!

So, are you ready to experience the perfect harmony of art, architecture, nature, and spirituality?  The Sacro Monte di Orta awaits!
